Explanation:
The trait describes the longitudinal distribution of aquatic invertebrates, ranging from the source (crenon) to the lower part of large rivers (metapotamon) and estuaries. Water bodies not directly connected to the main stream (e.g. lakes, ponds, pools, disconnected side-arms, marshes, temporary waters) are summarised in the "outside river system" category. Eight categories are defined.
